FAQs

Find answers to common questions or if you need more help, get in touch.
Can I change or cancel a lesson?

Our lessons run live at set times, so we are not able to cancel or move individual bookings. However, every family gets full access to the lesson recording afterwards, so even if you cannot attend live, your child will still be able to watch the session. Many families enjoy being able to pause, replay and learn at a pace that suits them.

Can my child access the lessons from anywhere?

Yes. As long as they have a reliable Wi Fi connection, your child can access Virtual Academy from anywhere, whether at home, with family or away on holiday.

Do I need special software or equipment?

You only need a laptop, desktop or tablet with a stable internet connection. A pen and notebook are recommended so your child can work out questions during the lesson. Our sessions are taught through Zoom and use a plugin called Slido. Simply accept it when prompted and you are ready to get started.

Can I try a lesson before committing?

Yes. All of our lessons are pay as you go, so you can try a single session or attend many more. There are no contracts, no membership fees and no long term commitment required.

How do I book a lesson?

Simply visit our booking page and browse the timetable. We offer lessons throughout the week. Choose the sessions you would like to attend, add them to your basket, and the links will appear in your dashboard. If you miss a live lesson, you can watch the recording afterwards as many times as you like.

What if my child struggles with a topic?

This is completely normal and part of learning. Your child can rewatch the lesson recording as many times as they need through their dashboard. They also have access to follow up questions linked to the topic, which helps build confidence and deepen understanding.

How does my child ask questions?

Children can ask questions safely through our moderated chat feature. They communicate only with their teacher, not with other students. This keeps the environment safe, focused and supportive while still allowing children to get the help they need.

How long are the lessons?

Our research and development shows that 45 minutes is the optimal lesson length for children aged 8 to 11. It keeps them focused, engaged and learning effectively without becoming tired.

Are lessons live or pre-recorded?

All of our lessons are taught live by qualified teachers. If you miss a session, the full recording is added to your dashboard so your child can watch it back at any time. This is ideal for revision and reinforcing tricky topics.

Are the teachers experienced in 11+ exams?

Very. We have assembled a team of nationally recognised educators to design the curriculum, create the resources and teach every lesson. Your child is in expert hands from the moment they join.

Do you follow the GL / CEM style of the 11+?

Yes. Our lessons are designed around the GL Assessment style used in many grammar school areas. We also include question types that appear in CEM style exams so that children feel confident with a wide range of formats.

What year groups are lessons suitable for?

We offer three levels of lessons to support children at the right stage of their 11+ journey:

  • Year 4 – an introduction focused on building strong foundations, confidence and key skills.
  • Year 5 – our main programme, covering all the essential knowledge and techniques your child will need for the 11+.
  • Year 5 Advanced – designed for children who enjoy an additional challenge. This programme builds on the Year 5 essentials and extends skills further to stretch high-ability learners.
Most children follow the standard Year 5 pathway, but the Advanced option is available for those who are ready for faster pace and deeper problem-solving.
What subjects do you cover?

We offer a full 11+ programme in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning (VR) and Non Verbal Reasoning (NVR). Each lesson usually combines two areas. Maths lessons are typically paired with NVR and English lessons with VR. This helps children build connected skills and gives them balanced preparation each week.
